Tooth Decay

The Most Common Dental Disease

Tooth decay is one of the most widespread diseases in the world. In so-called developed countries, it affects more than 80–90% of the population. By contrast, among some populations or tribes that follow a traditional lifestyle and consume a natural diet with minimal sugar, the incidence of tooth decay is significantly lower. This shows that lifestyle and dietary habits have a major influence on the development of tooth decay.

How Does Tooth Decay Develop?

The main cause of tooth decay is dental microbial plaque. This is a thin layer of bacteria that accumulates on the surface of the teeth. These bacteria break down sugars from food and produce acids that gradually damage the tooth enamel. If plaque is not regularly removed through proper oral hygiene, the tooth gradually becomes damaged and decay develops.

A significant risk factor is the frequent consumption of sugar and sugary drinks, which promotes the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity. Excessive sugar intake is also associated with other health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure, which may indirectly affect oral health.

Connection with Gum Health

Dental plaque is not only a cause of tooth decay, but also of gum inflammation (gingivitis) and periodontitis. If plaque is not removed regularly, it can gradually damage not only the tooth enamel but also the tissues that support the teeth in the jaw.

It is therefore important for patients to understand that most oral diseases are closely linked to the quality of oral hygieneand regular removal of dental plaque.

Prevention of Tooth Decay

The foundation of tooth decay prevention is proper oral care and healthy lifestyle habits. The most important measures include:

  • brushing your teeth regularly at least twice a day

  • using interdental brushes or dental floss

  • limiting the consumption of sugar and sugary drinks

  • using fluoride toothpaste

  • attending regular preventive dental check-ups and dental hygiene appointments

With proper prevention and regular care, it is possible to significantly reduce the risk of tooth decay and maintain healthy teeth throughout life.
